Notes from my review and thoughts from our guest critics:
- “Dumb objects” are objects in and of themselves
- Connected vs. plugged in
- Started of my presentation was about the poetry of objects but ended up in a place about gadgetry
- Answering machines idea is not as emotional as the alarm clock
- I ended up in a different place than where I began my presentation from
- Object as a trigger for memory/imagination but ended as an exploration of gadgetry
- Not sold on the nostalgia of old tech
- No mass-produced object means anything to anyone except the owner
- Reference: The Tears of Things
- Guest critic would like to throw old technology out the window and smash it
Notes from post-mortem with Anthony:
- High level question for my group: “How do objects both define and inform us?”
- I’m really hitting on the ideas of nostalgia and technology (phenomenon)
- Nostalgia: not about the utility of the objects but our ability to have an emotional attachment to it
- Technology: hard to connect emotionally with advanced technology because we know it will break and/or change often
- How do we connect to objects?
- Is my project going to be earnest? Critical? Satirical? What’s my point of view?
